Riga - A Sophisticated Capital City
The National Opera has an international and classical repertoire and is also home to the Riga Ballet, where Miikhail Baryshnikov began his career. Six theatres stage plays from Shakespeare to Durrenmatt and contemporary works. Concert halls reflect the vitality of Latvia's musicians, while numerous galleries and exhibitions testify to Latvian artistic talent that resisted Soviet domination and has now fully flowered again. There is even an indoor circus, over 108 years old, and a puppet theatre. ENTERTAINMENT AND SHOPPING Jazz clubs, discos, nightclubs, casinos - they're all listed in local city guides. But you'll get equal entertainment during the day browsing through antique shops, or souvenir hunting. Don't miss out on amber jewellery. It's much better value here than in the rest of Europe or America. There are shops both in the old town and in the complex of streets off Brivibas. You should visit the central market too, a bustling and colourful experience in five halls that were originally built as Zeppelin hangars. Riga home page: http://www.riga800.lv/
