HUNTING The best hunting opportunities in Latvia are found in northern Kurzeme and in northern Vidzeme, as well as around the lakes of Latgale. Latvian laws and regulations specify the hunting opportunities available to visitors. The State Hunting Enterprise manages 10 different specific regions for hunting, including the Jaunmokas Castle in Tukums District. Elsewhere hunting procedures are based on the number of licenses that are issued and following agreements with the holders of the licenses. Most licenses are bought by groups of hunters, and guests can arrange to hunt together with them. Hunting licenses are issued to hunt wild boar, deer, buck, moose, lynx, grouse and prairie hen, but you do not need a license to hunt wolves, racoons, foxes, rabbits, beavers, martens, badgers and others. If you want to take your trophy outside of Latvia, however, you have to pay a tax on the value of the animal. Duck and goose hunting are popular in Latvia. The birds can be hunted without limitations as to their numbers, but only in the fall. State Hunting Enterprise |
