NATURE RESERVES The Gauja National Park embraces 93.6 km along the shores of the Gauja - the most beautiful river in Latvia - magnificent ancient valley with million years old Devon age sandstones. Sieve rock and Organ (Eagle's) rock, Devil's cave and Gutmana estate, Zvartes rock (the highest rock in Latvia) and Kuku rapids, Cesu palace and the Nature park of Ligatne and a lot of other interesting objects you can see and call. For water tourist's 22 camps are established in the banks of the Gauja. Going by boat you can better feel and understand the passionate character of the river, the beauty of the vicinity and the impressive ancient valley. The training and recreation park of Ligatne gives you a chance to meet roe, wild bears, mooses, auroches and other animals of Latvia's fauna. The Botanic track will introduce you to the plants of the valley; on the Fairy-tale track you will meet well-known legendary characters. The Gauja National Park covers 91,745 hectares; forests cover 47% of the Park. 876 species of filices and seedlings and 434 species of mushrooms and fungi are found in the Park. From multiformity of animals, fish, reptiles and birds 62 are included in the Red Book of Latvia. The Park unites the functions of nature protection and recreation. Gauja National Park The Slitere National Park is part of what is known as the Liv Coast in northern Kurzeme - at the place where the Bay of Riga meets the Baltic Sea. The park has an outstanding variety of natural landscapes, with 23 types of forests and tree types of bogs. Kolka is a place where massive groups of birds gather during springtime migration. Visitors can enjoy the cultural history of seaside villages at the Lapmezciems Museum and taste various kinds of smoked fish nearby.
