DAUGAVPILS

Dvinsk for Poles, the second largest city in Latvia,
has developed by the joining of separate parts of the
city. The buildings of the 19th century have remained
in the center between the Daugava River a railway
station. Daugavpils has its own theatre, the
Daugavpils Musical and Drama theatre. It is situated
in a Union House (1937) in the city center. The
northeast part of the city, Stropi, is a popular rest
area located near the Big Stropu Lake.
JURMALA
The Baltic spa-town Jurmala is situated 25 km from
Riga, on the coast of the Gulf of Riga. Jurmala is
famous for its natural curative features - mild climate,
sea and fresh air, and medical mud and spa water.
The resort is attractive by its golden sandy 30-km
long beach, vast pine forests and the town's natural
border - the Lielupe River. Wooden summer cottages
built in the beginning of this century, richly decorated
with wooden carvings, and modern buildings of
spa-institutions successfully co-exist. In Jurmala
today there are nearly 40 hotels and spa-hotels,
offering recreation and health cure. Active
holiday-makers can spend their time in tennis courts,
different training facilities, yachting or water biking,
play billiards or go horseback riding. Gourmands are
welcome in Jurmala restaurants and bars, but to
satisfy your soul, you can visit Art Galleries and
different local amusements.
LIEPAJA
The town of Liepaja was formed in the territory
between the Baltic Sea and the Liepaja and Tosmare
Lakes. The port channel divides the city into two
parts. Modern Liepaja is an industrial, cultural and
educational center. Buildings of different architectural
styles and ages are located in Liepaja within a
relatively small area. Different and unique, together
they compliment each other and create an
atmosphere characteristic only to Liepaja. The
Art-Nouveau style in Liepaja architecture is special
with its restraint and laconism, perfectly fitting in the
whole city building. The most characteristic buildings
can be seen on Kurmajas Prospect, Ausekla iela,
Kursu iela and Dzintaru iela. The serene, clean beach
of Liepaja is a nice place to rest. Liepaja St.Trinity
Lutheran Church (1742-1758) is famous for its organ.
This organ was the largest in the world until 1912. It
remains the largest in Europe. |
