The Regions of Latvia Historically the country now known as Latvia was divided into five regions - Latgale, Zemgale, Kurzeme, the Liv land and Selija - each named after the tribe which lived in it and each with its own distinctive dialect, culture, costume and traditions. During the 13th century about 300,000 were Crusaders and their subordinates, lived in these regions. The country was known simply as the Baltics until the late 19th century, when Auseklis, A. Pumpurs., A. Kronvalds, E. Dinsbergs and other members of the New Latvia movement popularised the name 'Latvia'. When the Latvian Republic was founded in 1919, the five traditional regions, which had been annexed at various times to Poland, Sweden, Germany or Russia, were subsumed into the four modern provinces of Vidzeme, Kurzeme, Zemgale and Latgale. The West Latvia section covers much of the territory of Kurzeme. |
