Riga

Napoleon called Riga a suburb of London where the traditions of many nations crossed paths. The legend says that once in a hundred years the Devil pokes his head from the water of the Daugava River and asks if Riga is ready. If he hears Yes, the city will celebrates its 800 years anniversary in 2001 would inevitably sink into the Daugava. For this reason, Riga must be built continuously and becomes more beautiful each year. If you do not believe this, come and have a look!

Riga with 764 thsd. people has more big-city excitement than anywhere else in the Baltic States. Situated in the mouth of the Daugava River, on the shore of the Riga Gulf of the Baltic Sea, Riga has excellent air, train and road connections, which makes it the major tourist attraction of the country. Riga is rich in history, culture and political life. Visitors will admire buildings of remarkable Gothic, Baroque, Classicism and Art Nouveau architecture.

Riga has traditionally been the trade and business connection between the East and West. It is destined to become a commercial and tourist center in the coming decades. In a few years it ought to compete favorably, on a smaller scale, with Prague, Paris and other gems. Riga has a lively cultural life. The Dome church acoustics, as well as its huge organ are world-famous. Well worth attending are the frequent organ concerts. Riga stages a variety of festivals, (especially in summer) ranging from classical music or theater to jazz and rock. Riga offers a great number of fascinating museums and art galleries.
