Dear colleagues from near and far, The Latvian Tourism Development Agency welcomes you to the shores of the Baltic Sea to our small country, Latvia. We invite you to become acquainted with our Republic, its people, culture and environment. The history of the Republic has been dramatic, beginning with its torturous birth after the Great War in 1918. During its independence until 1940, Latvia had envisioned and enjoyed an existence that was both spiritually free and one, which respected human life. Our nation has suffered through and survived, both violent destruction and degradation. Yet unbroken, Latvia has managed to preserve its traditions, spirit and soul. Latvia is becoming a model of freedom, culture and tourism. We are delighted to introduce you to the Heartland of the Baltics - Latvia. Situated on the shores of the Baltic Sea, Latvia shares borders with Estonia, Lithuania, Russia and Belorus. The interior is hilly with dense forests, over 3,000 lakes and 12,000 rivers. With an area of 64,589 square kilometres, the country's population is 2.4 million. The capital of Latvia is Riga with approximately 764,000 inhabitants. It was founded in 1201 and was destined to become one of the richest and most beautiful cities in Northern Europe. In the centuries to follow, Latvia was subjected to turbulent successions of foreign rule. This ended with the proclamation of independence in 1991 and complete withdrawal of the Russian troops in August 1994. |
