Getting Around in Latvia

BY AIR

The Airport of Riga is situated about 7 km from the city. One can get there by taxi or by bus number 22. There are local airports suitable for small planes only in several other towns but regular domestic connections by air have not developed to date.
Aviocompany Liepaja the owner of the second international airport of Latvia. The company started organizing charter flights to Gotland, Sweden, Bornholn, Denmark and other destinations.

BY RAIL

Latvia's rail network includes routes from Riga to all other major towns in the country. Electric trains to Aizkraukle, Jelgava, Saulkrasti and Jurmala leave one to three times every hour. There are diesel trains to Liepaja, Ventspils and Zilupe two times daily and Daugavpils three times daily. The Railway Terminal is Stacijas laukums. BY COACH

One can reach nearly every place in the country by coach. There are regular routes from Riga to the bigger towns:
Cesis,Ventspils, Jelgava, Jekabpils, Liepaja, Bauska, Valmiera - every hour; Daugavpils, Rezekne - 6 daily, Kuldiga - 9 daily,
Aluksne - 7daily;
Valka, Balvi - 4 daily.

BY CAR

The traffic is right-hand side traffic. Seat belts must be worn. The maximum speed in cities and another populated areas is 50 km/h. Outside cities or villages it is 90 km/h. There will be special signs where 100 km/h on motorways is allowed. Driving with lights on is compulsory.

We advise you to do all car maintenance works before your trip to Latvia. In case of a breakdown, contact the specialist in a local garage. There are services for all kinds of cars and special services depending on the brand of a car. Contact your automobile association for more service data. In case of accident call the ambulance (Tel. : 03) and police (Tel. : 02). Transportation of broken cars call: 8000000.

Alcohol is forbidden while operating a vehicle. Blood alcohol content should not exceed 0.5 promille. There are good road connections from Riga to all parts of the country. The range of local and international petrol stations are found all over Latvia. Diesel, Normal and Super petrol are available, lead-free petrol can be obtained in majority of petrol stations.
